SHAWN SNIDER CHAPMAN
Attorney Profile
Profile: Ms. Chapman, previously the head
of the Criminal and Marketing Division of the Law Offices
of Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., was born in Los Angeles, California.
She is admitted as an attorney in California; U.S. District
Court, Central, District of California and U.S. Court of
Appeals, Ninth Circuit. Ms. Chapman began her legal career
with the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office
where her experience included all facets of felony and misdemeanor
jury trial practice, appellate work and training new lawyers.
As a deputy public defender, Ms. Chapman tried over sixty
cases to jury verdict and handled hundreds of other cases
toward favorable dispositions, settlements, and dismissals.
Education: Ms. Chapman received her Bachelor
of Arts degree in English at the University of California,
Los Angeles in 1984. She then taught English at a South
Central Los Angeles high school for a year before entering
Southwestern University School of Law. At Southwestern,
Ms. Chapman was a member of the Dean’s List and held
the position of Commissioner of Community Affairs. She was
also listed in “Who’s Who in American Universities.”
Activities: Ms. Chapman is a frequent legal
commentator on national news programs regarding topical
legal matters. Her regular media appearances have included
The Today Show, Good Morning America, Court TV, Fox News
Channel and CNN. Ms. Chapman also has the honor of serving
as a visiting faculty lecturer at Benjamin N. Cardozo Law
School’s Intensive Trial Advocacy Program and is a
guest speaker at law schools on high-profile litigation,
women in the law and the representation of “celebrity
clients”. In that regard, Ms. Chapman has represented,
in addition to O.J. Simpson and Tupac Shakur, Larry Johnson,
Byron Scott, Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Master P and Nia
Long. Ms. Chapman was a featured lawyer on the legal show
“Power of Attorney” on Fox TV and is in pre-production
on a new MTV court show.
Memberships: She is a member of American
Bar Association; National Bar Association; Consumer Attorneys
Association of Los Angeles; California Attorneys for Criminal
Justice, Board of Governors; Langston Bar Association; Black
Women Lawyers; and California Young Democrats.
Notable Cases: Notable cases Ms. Chapman
has worked on have included People v. Orenthal James
Simpson; People v. Sara Jane Olson,a.k.a. Kathleen Soliah
(a twenty-seven year old murder case involving Patty
Hearst and the Symbionese Liberation Army); and People
v. Elmer "Geronimo" Pratt.
